Murmuring and Complaining
We must be careful not to murmur, complain, and cry out against God as the people did when they saw the Egyptian army coming. Such shows a lack of faith and is displeasing to God.
Jude 12-19 -These are grumblers, complainers
I Corinthians 10:1-11 -Nor complain as some of them also complained
The Lord Provides
When it looked like there was no way for them to survive, God provided a way. It was not a way that they perhaps looked for or that seemed best to the people, but God provided what was necessary.
Matthew 6:25-34 -Do not worry
Acts 8:26-29, 35-39 -In desert, God provided water for baptism
Belief is Found and Lost
The believed enough to camp where God told them, but then lost that faith. They rebuilt their faith after being saved from the Egyptian army by God, but would lose their faith again. We must be sure not to have a faith as wavering and weak as theirs!
Numbers 13:26-33 -The spies say that they land is too strong to take
Numbers 14:1-4, 11-19 -The people heed the 10 spies, angering God
John 8:30-31, 33, 39, 41, 57-79 -Those who believed tried to stone Christ

Two Cubits of Quail - 2/15/09pm
Numbers 11:1-9 -The people are not satisfied with manna, want meat
Exodus 16:31 -The taste of manna was like wafers made with honey
As we’ve looked at before, the Israelites did a lot of grumbling. This time, they’re dissatisfied with the food that God has provided them. How often do we grow dissatisfied with the blessings God has given, and want more and more?
Philippians 4:6 -Thanksgiving to God
I Corinthians 10:1-13 -An example to us, do not grumble
II Corinthians 12:7-10 -Thorn in the flesh, grace is sufficient
Numbers 11:10-15 -The Lord and Moses are both angry with the people
When the people complain against God, Moses reacts with anger. Do we grow angry over sin? Do we have much of a reaction at all?
John 2:13-17 -Jesus clearing the temple
Jeremiah 6:13-15 -They do not even know how to blush
We also see Moses essentially asking, “Why me?” It seemed to him that God had given him more than he could bear. Do we ever feel that way?
I Corinthians 10:12-13 -God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear
Matthew 11:28-30 -His yoke is easy, His burden is light
Numbers 11:16-23 -The Lord tells Moses that He will provide much meat
Numbers 11:31-34 -The Lord provides an overabundance of quail, and creates a plague
When the Lord gave them quail, He did not provide simply a little bit. He quite literally flooded the camp 3 feet deep in quail, and covering such an area that it was thick with quail that you’d have to walk a full day out of camp to get away from it!
II Thessalonians 2:1-12 -God will send a strong delusion
Romans 1:18-27 -God gave them up to sin
We also see that God’s anger burned against those who yielded to their own will.
I Peter 4:1-6 -Have the same attitude as Christ: live for God’s will
Hebrews 10:35-36 -When you have done His will, you will be rewarded

The Plagues of Egypt - 1/25/09pm
I Samuel 4:4-9 -The Philistines remember the plagues of Egypt
The Philistines, in fighting against Israel, remembered the plagues and understood what it meant for them, who opposed God. Let us take a few moments to look back at the plagues and see what we learn of God from them. In them we see His power, His authority, His anger, the inevitability of His will, and His mercy.
Exodus 7:14-25 -First Plague: Nile to blood
God’s ability to touch not just the Nile, but the water already gathered from the Nile, but not the water under ground.
Egypt is completely dependant on the Nile. By striking against it, The Lord struck directly at Egypt’s ability to exist, showing His power over the kingdoms of men.
Exodus 8:1-15 -Second plague: frogs
The water which once was good had been made useless, and now gave forth another problem: huge numbers of frogs.
We also see the hand of God in that they all died when He decided, not naturally over time.
Exodus 8:16-19 -Third plague: gnats/lice
We see God delivering a very personal plague: gnats/lice which infest the people of Egypt.
Exodus 8:20-31 -Fourth plague: flies
We continue to see how God can use even the small things on His behalf. It does not take the great things in this world to accomplish His will, but even the small and seemingly insignificant are used to His purpose.
Exodus 9:1-6 -Fifth plague: disease and death of livestock
Notice the distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt. Notice God’s mercy and care for His people!
Exodus 9:8-12 -Sixth plague: boils
Again we see God impacting each individual person. The disease on cattle was not heeded, so the lesson was made more personal.
Exodus 9:22-35 -Seventh plague: hail
God’s destruction of the crops is quite a punishment of Egypt. He shows His power to control even how people eat.
Exodus 10:12-20 -Eighth plague: locusts
What the hail didn’t get, the locusts did, evidently some time later.
Exodus 10:21-29 -Ninth plague: darkness
You can imagine the terror caused by this darkness.
Yet we see that Israel had light in their homes. Again, we see God’s punishment of those who do not follow Him, and His mercy to those who do.
Exodus 12:29-30 -Tenth plague: death of firstborn
We see the final plague on Egypt. This one affecting every family in a permanent way.
And yet we see that Israel, in following the Lord’s commands, is spared.
We too can receive God’s blessings and not His punishments if we follow and obey Him. As Israel was freed from bondage, we too can escape punishment and be freed from the bondage of sin through obedience and faith.

Worshiping the Golden Calf - 6/1/08pm
Sin at Sinai
Exodus 32 -Israel and the golden calf
Had Taken the blessings of God and used them to oppose God
God had given much to Israel during the Exodus, and see what they do with the blessings God had given them?
Exodus 12:33-36 -Israelites plunder Egypt
Galatians 5:13 -Don’t use liberty as an occasion to the flesh
How often do we take what God has given us and twist it into what we shouldn’t? How often do we use God’s blessings and utterly fail to glorify God with our use of them?
Had decided to make their own rules of worship
Were they worshiping God? Verses 4 and 5 indicate that they seem to think so. But is God pleased? Of course not!
Galatians 1:6-9 -Another gospel
Jeroboam’s Sin
I Kings 12:25-33 -Jeroboam sets up golden calves
Again, the claim is that they are worshiping the Lord
In verse 28, Jerboam makes the claim that these represent the Lord. In God’s eyes, however, they are not.
Deuteronomy 5:32-33 -Do not turn aside to the left or to the right
Romans 12:1-2 -Our lives are our worship
Leviticus 10:1-3 -Nadab and Abihu’s wrong worship
They failed to learn from examples
They failed to look at the history of Israel and learn.
I Corinthians 10:6-11 -Israel’s example of what not to do
Modern Golden Calves
How often do you hear someone say, “Well, we all follow the same God, just in different ways?” Or perhaps you hear, “We believe in the same God and Jesus, so we’re both ok.”
Ephesians 4:3-6 -ONE
John 14:5-7 -THE way, THE truth, THE light
I John 1:5-7 -Unity with the light, unity with each other
Just because someone tells you that it is all the same God, just different ways of serving Him, or that they are just following a different road to heaven, think of the golden calves! The only way is to follow Christ completely and accurately.
The Bible helps us avoid the golden calf
The Bible tells us what we need to believe, and what we need to do to follow the Lord, and not turn aside to golden calves.
John 20:30-31 -Written that you may believe and have life
I Timothy 3:14-15 -Written to know how to conduct ourselves
If we know how to believe and obey, and follow through with it, then we can avoid worshiping the golden calves.

A Stranger in a Strange Land - 5/25/08am
Moses
Exodus 1:1-14 -Israelites living in captivity, not own land
From the beginning, Moses was in a strange land. He did not begin life in a homeland, but rather, a stranger in captivity.
Exodus 2:1-10 -Moses taken into Pharaoh’s household
We see that not only was he born while his people were in captivity, but that he was taken as a stranger into a strange family.
Exodus 2:11-22 -Left Egypt for Midian
Once again , we see Moses leaving for a strange land.
Exodus 4:18-20 -Moses returns to Egypt
In the account, Moses is treated poorly by both Pharaoh and the other Israelites (Exodus 5:19-21). After the plagues and after leaving Egypt, we know that Moses received the Law at Mt. Sinai. We know that God provided for the people, and that the people failed in their faith when they spied out Canaan. As a result, they wandered for forty years.
Deuteronomy 34:1-8 -Moses dies without ever coming home
Moses never made it home, he lived his entire life as a stranger in a strange land.
Hebrews 11:24-29 -By faith, Moses looked ahead to his reward
Hebrews 11:13-16 -These people looked for a heavenly home
Consider that Moses was never at home. His entire life was spent in strange lands, and he died seeing, but never making it to, the promised land where his home was.
Our Home
Philippians 3:20-21 -Our citizenship is in heaven
II Corinthians 5:1-10 -Away from God while in the body, longing for our heavenly dwelling
I Peter 1:1 -

I Peter 2:9-12 -
Are we living as strangers here on earth? It is something that will be uncomfortable, to be sure. There are aspects of it that we often don’t like to think about or try to brush over.
-As strangers, do we feel uncomfortable around the things of this world? Does it make us uncomfortable to be around worldliness in speech, entertainment, and such things? (Jeremiah 6:13-15)
-Are we actually separate from those around us? Are we actually strangers? Or are we trying to blend in? (II Corinthians 6:14-18)
-As strangers, do we try to live at peace with others, even though we are different? (Romans 12:18)
-As strangers, are we seeking our home? Or have we decided that where we are is good enough? (Matthew 13:44)
