Nation Promise
When the Israelites leave Egypt, we see that indeed the promise to Abraham that a nation would descend from him had been fulfilled.

Exodus 19:3-6 -God describes the Israelites as a nation
Land Promise
In the days of Joshua, the promise of the land was fulfilled. However, we see that there is a warning: if they fail to continue to following the Lord, they will be destroyed and removed from the land. They failed, and several hundred years later, they were carried into captivity.
Joshua 11:16-23 -Joshua conquers the land as God had promised
Joshua 23:14-16 -When you have transgressed the covenant
Deuteronomy 30:11-20 -But if Israel does not obey...
Seed Promise
And of course, most importantly of all, the Seed promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and through Him we can have forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

Galatians 3:5-9 -Gentiles blessed through promise to Abraham
I Timothy 2:1-7 -Christ wants, and was ransom for, all men to be saved

I Cannot, But God Can - 1/18/09pm
Genesis 41:1-16 -Pharaoh’s dreams
Genesis 41:17-32 -The interpretation of the dreams
We see Joseph giving the honor and glory to God for the interpretation of the dream. He recognized his own inability to do as the Pharaoh wanted, but knew that God had the power to do so. It is hard to think of this passage without recalling a similar event that occurred some time later.
Daniel 2:10-11 -No man can do as Nebuchadnezzar asked
Daniel 2:17-23 -Daniel prays to God for aid
Daniel 2:24-30 -Daniel gives credit to God
Once again we see Daniel recognizing his own lack of ability and power, but acknowledges the ability of God to do what man cannot do. What man cannot not do alone can often be accomplished with God.
I Peter 4:8-11 -Let him do it as of the ability which God gives
We all serve in some way. Let us make use of the ability which God provides and do so earnestly.
Philippians 4:11-13 -I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me
Psalm 28:1-9 -The Lord is the strength of the righteous
Psalm 37:39 -The Lord is the strength of the righteous
God strengthens the righteous. It is not a matter of physical strength or the ability to do superhuman or Herculean tasks or that we will never fail in anything we try. It is a matter of the granting of the endurance and ability to overcome when we would otherwise fail. God gives the peace and hope that builds strength for us to do His will.

Lot moves back into Sodom, again choosing earthly things
Lot chooses one wrong over another wrong

Cain and Abel - 1/4/09pm
Genesis 4:1-16
To Be Like Cain
Jude 1-13 -Taken the way of Cain
Angry that unrighteousness isn’t accepted
How often have you seen someone grow angry over the fact that their wrong doing isn’t acceptable to God? How often have you known someone who is set in their sin and unwilling to change, angry that God has said their actions are wrong?
Mark 10:17-22 -Rich young ruler
I Corinthians 6:9-20 -Such were some of you
Anger towards brother
Cain, instead of reacting as he should have, grew unjustly angry with his brother. In his anger, he killed his brother. How often do we lose our tempers and grow angry as Cain did?
I John 3:11-15 -Love the brethren, don’t murder like Cain
Matthew 5:21-26 -Anger and murder
Romans 13:8-10 -Love instead of kill
Anger towards punishment
For his sin, Cain was punished. And even though there was mercy in that punishment, and even though it was earned, he was unhappy with the severity of it. We must accept the consequences for our actions. Instead of becoming angry over them, let us use them to spur us on to perfection.

Genesis 12:10-20
What can we learn from Pharaoh?
He was deceived by lies (vv 11-15)
Much as Pharaoh was deceived, so we can be to. And being deceived can lead us into as much, and more, trouble as he received.
II Thessalonians 2:8-12 -Being deceived can result in eternal condemnation
II Timothy 4:3-4 -People will want their ears tickled and turn aside to deceptions
Colossians 3:5-11 -Do not lie to one another
He treated others well (v 16)
Pharaoh extended hospitality and saw to it that he treated others well. Even at the end, when he had justification for punishing Abram, he did not, but simply sent them on their way.
Matthew 22:34-40 -Love your neighbor
Matthew 7:12 -Do unto others…
Galatians 6:10 -Do good to all men, especially the household of faith
He had to deal with the consequences of another’s sin (vv 17-18)
Pharaoh had to deal with the consequences of another man’s sin. He was not the one who had lied, yet he had to deal with what came of it.
Genesis 3:14-19 -We have the consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin
Genesis 39:6-20 -Joseph suffers from the sin of Potiphar’s wife
He took steps to correct the problem when he discovered it (vv 18-20)
When the problem became apparent, Pharaoh did not ignore it. He did what was necessary to solve it. We need to be sure to take the same approach: when it is our error, we much fix it, and when it is another’s, we work in love to help them correct it.
I Corinthians 5:1-5 -Paul took steps, the Corinthians were to take steps, the individuals involved should have taken steps
Galatians 6:1 -Restore the sinner GENTLY, watching yourself
He did not remain close to the sin, but put it away from himself (vv 18-20)
Sometimes we are tempted to remain close to what tempts us. Pharaoh did not! He put away and had no more to do with it. We should follow his example in this.
II Timothy 2:22 -FLEE youthful lusts, pursue righteousness
I Peter 4:2-4 -USED to do these things, but they no longer run with
those people

There are other lessons to be learned from the account as well.

Abram was thinking more about his physical condition and well being than about what was spiritually right. It is something that is easy to do, and as we can see, even this great man of God fell into this trap. We must be certain to first put our thoughts and focus on all things spiritual!
Philippians 3:18-19 -If your focus is the physical, you are an enemy of Christ
Hebrews 11:13-16 -The great people here looked to the spiritual, so

Noah - 7/20/08pm
How wicked was the world?
Genesis 6:1-8
Sometimes we look around us and marvel at how wicked the world is. Yet, God has not become so fed up with it that He has destroyed it. Sometimes we think of how every year it gets worse. Imagine, however, how wicked it must have been in that time!
Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 -There is nothing new under the sun
Who Saved Noah?
Genesis 6:9-21
We see that God saved Noah. He gave Noah instructions to follow. He gave Noah the opportunity. God saved Noah.
Hebrews 5:7-9 -Jesus: the author of salvation to the obedient
Why was Noah Saved?
Genesis 6:22-7:12
Noah was saved because he was a righteous man who followed God. He obeyed the Lord. He trusted in the Lord, when everyone else probably thought he was crazy. He was willing to be saved, and so God saved him.
II Peter 2:5 -Noah, a preacher of righteousness
The Action that Saved also Condemned

The flood, God’s pronouncement on the world, condemned a great many people to death. It was also the same action that saved Noah. It drew a line, dividing those who followed God and those who didn’t. Is this not also how it works in the New Testament? That Christ’s blood divides? That our obedience serves not only in our salvation, but in condemnation of sin?
Hebrews 11:7 -By faith he condemned the world
God cares for His own

God cared enough for His few followers that He saved them. Make no mistake. God has the same care and concern for His followers today. And just as He provided for Noah, He’ll provide for us. Maybe not with the wealth and riches that we may want in this life, but in the life to come.
I Peter 5:6-7 -He cares for you
How can we be saved like Noah?
Just as Noah was saved by water, so it is with us today. Just as Noah was saved through believing obedience, so we to must follow the Lord
I Peter 3:20-21 -Baptism, which now saves you
God has Promised

God made a promise. He promised that the world would not be destroyed by water again. He did not promise that He would not destroy the earth, but only stated the how. The end will come. Christ will return. Will you be ready on that day?

The Garden of Eden - 6/29/08am
The Rule
Genesis 2:15-17
God gave Adam and Eve a single, simple rule: Don’t. It is something that we see throughout scripture: God’s rules are not individually difficult. They are not burdensome or impossible. They are simple, straightforward ordinances.
I John 5:1-5 -His commands are not burdensome
Matthew 11:28-30 -His yoke is easy, his burden is light
The Lie

Satan, coming as a serpent, lied to Eve. Notice that what he essentially says is that God didn’t really mean what He said. How often do we hear similar things? That even though the Bible says it, God wouldn’t really do that.
II Peter 2:1-10 -If God punished all these, He’ll punish other sinners
II Thessalonians 1:5-9 -Punish those who don’t know God or obey Christ
The Sin

And so we see the first two people sin. And we see several different aspects of sin in their action. We see that it is disobedience to God. We also see that it is following Satan.

When they realized that they had sinned, and recognized they were naked and had sinned, they tried to hide from God. This is often a person’s first response: to hide their sin and try to hide from God.

The Consequences

The immediate consequences were all negative. Death would come (physical and spiritual) and mankind would have labor and pain. But notice the love of God in this: even at this point, He established His plan for the redemption of mankind, and did not leave man without hope.

The Birthright and Blessing -6/22/08am
Genesis 25:19-34 -Esau gives up his birthright to Jacob
Birthright
Deuteronomy 21:15-17 -The birthright is established
The birthright was a double portion of the inheritance. If there were 2 sons, the eldest (with the birthright) would get 2/3. If there were 3 sons, the eldest would get ½, and so on. Although this is under the Law of Moses, which had not come, the idea was the same throughout.
I Peter 1:4 -Our eternal inheritance
Esau gave up his birthright for stew. What do we trade our inheritance for?
Matthew 6:19-21 -Earthly treasures
Hebrews 11:24-25 -Passing pleasures
Do we not do the same thing as Esau, when we sell our inheritance for something small and insignificant? And consider how much greater our inheritance is!

The birthright was a double portion of the inheritance. If there were 2 sons, the eldest (with the birthright) would get 2/3. If there were 3 sons, the eldest would get ½, and so on. Although this is under the Law of Moses, which had not come, the idea was the same throughout.

Jacob deceived Abraham to get Esau’s blessing. It is fairly simple to deceive other men. But do we expect to be able to deceive the Lord?

In verse 4, the people were trying to avoid the very thing that God caused to happen. In essence, they were working to thwart the Lord’s will, and see that what they wanted was done instead.

It may seem as though this caused unnecessary confusion, but in addition to causing people populate the entire world, and limiting man’s pride, it made some of the signs in the New Testament possible and more impressive.

Occasionally I cross paths with someone, even among brethren, who believes that the only way we can understand the Bible is through knowledge of Hebrew and Koine Greek. Yet Christ and the apostles used a translation to teach from.

Hosea 10:8 -Christ’s quote follows the Septuagint, not the Hebrew
Scattered over the Earth
It was with this that man was scattered over the world, going their separate ways.
