You've Got to Crucify Somebody - 11/8/09pm
Matthew 27:15-50 -Christ’s crucifixion
We are all familiar with the crucifixion of our Lord, and of what it means to us. We are aware of the pain and agony and of the burden Christ bore that we might be forgiven of our sins and have the hope of eternal life. As we will see, there are two options available to us. Either we can crucify Christ, or we can crucify self.
Crucifying the Son of God
Acts 2:14-41 -Peter’s sermon on Pentecost
Acts 3:12-26 -Sermon to the Jews, convicting them of crucifying Christ
Hebrews 6:4-6 -They crucify for themselves the Son of God
If we choose to sin, we choose to crucify Christ, for we have made it necessary. When you sin, you crucify and shame the Son of God.

If we do not wish to crucify Christ, we must instead crucify self. We must put our own desires, self-will, and sin to death and shame, and live as a new man, alive to Christ.

Isaiah: The Coming Messiah - 8/23/09pm
Last week we considered some of the prophecies Isaiah made against Israel, of their sin, and of their return to come. This week we will take a brief look at some of what Isaiah had to say about the long awaited Messiah, how He could be recognized, and what would happen.
Prophecies of the Messiah
Isaiah makes several prophecies of the coming Savior. Some were regarding signs that would make it apparent who the Messiah was. Some were in regard to what the Messiah would do, or what would occur to the Savior.
Isaiah 7:13-17 -Immanuel, virgin birth
Isaiah 9:1-7 -From Galilee, names for, throne of David
Isaiah 11:1-16 -Root of Jesse
Isaiah 53:1-12 -The suffering savior
Fulfillment by the Messiah
We can read in the New Testament of the fulfillment of these prophecies. In this we find evidence that Jesus is the Messiah. In this we can have faith and trust that in following Him, we have not misplaced our hearts. We follow no lie, but the Truth.

Excuses Christ Failed to Make - 8/2/09am
Luke 14:16-24
It’s easy and common for us to make excuses to get out of things. We make excuses to not wash dishes, to not go to the doctor, or to not go to work. We also make excuses to not teach others, to assemble, or to study the Bible. I would like to take a few minutes and think about the results if Christ had made these same excuses.
“It’s just too hard to do God’s will!”
How often do we make or hear this excuse? It just seems like God has asked so much of us! But consider Christ, our ultimate example. Instead of making this excuse, He did as the Lord commanded.
John 6:32-40
Luke 22:39-46
“But I’ll have to give up things that I like!”
To follow Christ we may have to give up certain possessions, hobbies, entertainments, and friends. But no matter how much we must remove from our lives, consider what Christ gave up. Imagine if He had made this excuse!
Philippians 2:5-11
“No one will listen if I try to teach!”
This excuse is used to keep from teaching others. Again, consider the consequences if Christ had made this excuse. Yet He did not: He taught.
John 7:25-31
John 10:22-30
“I’ll do it later.”
When in doubt, procrastinate, right? Imagine if Christ had put off our salvation, instead of doing what needed to be done when it needed to be done: in the fullness of time.

“I’m just too tired right now.”
This is an easy excuse to make, particularly on Sunday mornings, isn’t it? Again, we see Christ not making this excuse. Even when tired, He sought to do God’s will. In fact, it’s only recorded once that He ever went apart to rest.

“But I may be laughed at or persecuted!”
Yes, people may laugh at us. They may even throw things. But imagine if Christ made this excuse. He would not have gone to the cross, and we would not have salvation.

The Lord's Supper - 4/26/09am
Luke 22:14-23 -Christ institutes the Lord’s Supper
Christ instated the Lord’s Supper, and we see that the feast of unleavened bread and Passover served as a foreshadowing of this. And we see that the bread used when Christ established this memorial was unleavened.
Exodus 12:14-20 -The feast of unleavened bread
We see that the Lord’s Supper is instituted on the basis of Christ’s body and blood. And that this was the beginning of the new covenant.
Mark 14:22-26 -The blood of the new covenant
Matthew 5:17 -Christ is the fulfillment of the law and prophets
Hebrews 8:1-13 -The new covenant is a better covenant
Matthew 26:26-30 -The blood was shed for the remission of sins
We also see that the first day of the week was the day established for us to partake of the Lord’s Supper. The Church's Foundation - 2/22/09pm
Matthew 16:13-19 -On this rock Christ built His church
What is the rock being referred to here. Is it Peter? It is his confession? The rock that the church is founded on is the basic truth of what Peter said:
That Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ.
I John 2:22-25 -Antichrists deny that Jesus is the Christ
I John 5:1 -Children of God believe that Jesus is the Christ
That Jesus is the Son of God.
I John 5:1-13 -Not believing Jesus as the Son is calling God a liar
I John 4:12-16 -God abides in those who confess Jesus as God’s Son
Let us take a few moments to consider the foundation of the church.
I Corinthians 3:1-17 -Christ the foundation that we built ourselves upon
Ephesians 2:20-22 -Christ is the chief cornerstone
I Peter 2:1-8 -Christ is the Chief cornerstone
The church is built upon Christ. Not upon other men. But upon Christ. Who Christ was, and what Christ taught, that is, the gospel.
We must be built on His example.

He Is Risen - 2/8/09am
Matthew 26:47-56 -Jesus is betrayed and arrested
Although Jesus knew Judas would betray Him, remember that the other disciples did not. It’s easy to know the anger and dismay this would cause the apostles
Matthew 26:57-66 -Jesus is brought before the Sanhedrin
If you are Peter, having followed Christ, you see the Lord being obviously falsely accused, mocked, and smitten. You see Him obviously unjustly condemned by the council of those who are supposed to be judging according to the Law.
Matthew 26:67-68 -Jesus is mocked and struck
Matthew 26:69-75 -Jesus is again betrayed by one close to Him
With all of this, it is easy to understand why Peter would deny the Lord. And yet, we see his remorse after doing so. Truly, at this point, it must seem to Peter that everyone had lost faith.
Matthew 27:11-26 -Jesus is brought before Pilate
And now we see Christ before Pilate, the hand of Rome in Judea. Pilate, who had no great regard for Jews, finds the man obviously innocent. Nonetheless, in order to sate the crowd, he hands him over and frees Barabbas. In a sense, taking the man’s place.
Matthew 27:27-31 -Jesus is again mocked and beaten
And now Christ is mocked and beaten again, this time by gentiles. It is as though the entire world, Jews, gentiles, and His disciples, have turned against Him.

Jesus, the Son of God, God the Son, gave up the spirit. How dark an hour this must have been for His disciples.
We often complain about how bad things are now, in the year 2009. Yet consider that moment in time. It seemed as though the entire world had rejected Christ, Satan had won, and God had been shown powerless and unable to bring about His will.

Matthew 28:1-10 -Jesus is risen
And yet, at this darkest hour of history, God overcomes! Jesus is risen from the dead. And those who follow Him have the victory because of this.
No matter ho bad things may seem to be, whether in politics, the economy, world affairs, or whatever else may trouble us, we have the victory, if we are baptized into the Lord’s death, and rise a new creature. If we do not deny and betray Him, if we follow Him, then salvation awaits us. Have you obeyed the gospel?

In what we often refer to as the beatitudes, we see descriptions of those who will be blessed. Do these descriptions accurately describe you?
Matthew 5:13 -The salt of the earth
Are you still useful?

The Temptation of Christ: Spotting Sin for What It Is - 1/11/09am
Luke 4:1-4 -Man does not live by bread alone
In this temptation, Satan presents Christ with a suggestion: that He turn rocks into bread. On the surface, it seems a reasonable suggestion, as there’s certainly nothing wrong with eating bread. Yet, had Christ given in, it would have been sin. It would have been a misuse of His divine power, and it would have been following the wrong priority.
Deuteronomy 8:1-5 -Man does not live by bread alone
Matthew 6:19-33 -Seek first the kingdom
Luke 4:5-8 -Worship the Lord your God
In this next temptation, Satan offers Christ a great deal, and all He has to do is worship the devil! Christ refuses. Was the world Satan’s to give? Of course not. Sin often appears to offer us more than it can actually give. It often seems more beneficial than it is in truth.
Deuteronomy 6:13-15 -Fear the Lord your God and serve Him only
Daniel 4:24-32 -The Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men
Hebrews 11:24-26 -”The passing pleasures of sin”
Luke 4:9-12 -Do not tempt the Lord your God
In this third temptation, Satan tells Christ to throw himself off the temple, because God will save Him. He even quotes scripture to encourage Him. Christ refuses. We see (at least) two things here about sin. It can come along with misused scripture. And it is putting God to the test: it is a challenge against the Almighty.

Exodus 17:1-7 -Israel tempts God at Meribah

We see that Satan is good at what he does. He waited to tempt Christ until he was sure Christ was hungry. When he was rebuffed, he left “for a season” and awaited further opportunities. We also see that this temptation comes immediately after Christ’s baptism. Just as he did for the Lord, he does for us: awaiting times when we are weak, looking for opportune times, and expending special effort after we flee him and obey Christ.

Christ's Authority - 8/3/08pm
Matthew 28:18-20 ALL authority in heaven and on earth
Authority was evident
Those around Christ could see that He held authority, and that when He spoke, it was different from when others spoke.
Matthew 7:28-29 Taught as one with authority
Authority over creation
How many times do we see Christ showing His authority over all things created? Whether it was in pure mastery over it, or whether it was the ability to miraculously manipulate created things to His will, Christ showed His authority over all created things.
Mark 4:35-41 Authority over the elements
Mark 5:1-20 Authority to cast out demons
Mark 5:21-34 Authority over sickness
Mark 5:35-43 Authority over death
Authority from the Father

The King of the Kingdom - Gospel Meeting Sermon 2 - 4/20/08pm
Hebrews 7
What does this passage teach us about Christ?
King of Righteousness (v 2)
Christ is the King of Righteousness. His kingdom is made up of the Righteous, and His decrees are righteous.
Ephesians 4:22-24 -Put on the new self, created to be like God in righteousness
II Timothy 3:16-17 -Scripture is for equipping in righteousness
II Timothy 4:8 -The Lord awards a crown of righteousness
King of Peace (v 2)
Christ is the King of Peace. He does not guarantee peace between His followers and the world, quite the opposite. But He makes peace between believers possible, and grants us an individual peace, knowing our eternal outcome.
Romans 15:13 -The Hope of God will fill us with joy and peace
Philippians 4:4-7 -The hope that surpasses all understanding
Psalm 119:165 -Those who love God’s word have peace
Acts 10:36 -The gospel of peace
Priest Forever (v 3)
Not only is Christ our king, but He is also our chief priest. He provides for us spiritually, forever.
I Peter 2:9-10 -Christians are a royal priesthood
Hebrews 4:14-5:10 -How Christ is our high priest
Able to Save Completely and Forever (vv 23-25)
Christ has the power to save us. Not only can He save us, but His salvation is complete. And it has no expiration date on it. Our salvation will not disappear unless we reject it.

He Was Our Perfect Sacrifice (vv 26-28)

Our Passover Lamb - 04/06/08am
Our Passover Lamb
A portion of why we have the Old Testament still with us and for us is that it provides foreshadowing. We can look at the Old Testament and see a glimmer of what was to come with the New Covenant And of course, we look back to the Old Testament to help us understand the New Testament. Many of the concepts found in the New are found in the Old: often with the new covenant focusing on the spiritual side of the concept, and the old focusing on the physical.
Hebrews 8:5 -Tabernacle/temple a shadow of what’s in heaven
Hebrews 10:1 -The Old Law was shadow of what was to come
Colossians 2:16-17 -OT holidays were a shadow of the reality of Christ
I would like to take some time today to examine one of the celebrations in the Old Covenant that found it’s reality and fulfillment in Christ.
Exodus 11:1-10 -God promises the plague on the firstborn
-God makes a clear separation between those who do and do not follow Him
Exodus 12:1-30 -The Passover is instituted
-The Israelites must obey to be passed over
-If you were the firstborn, would you have put just a little blood on the doorframe, or lots? Would they have been eager to obey, or hesitant?
-The Israelites were saved by the blood of a sacrificed, and eaten, lamb
-The lamb was to be an unblemished 1 year old males (taking the place of firstborn males)
-The bones of the lamb were not to be broken (Exodus 12:46)
-God kept His promise, and destroyed the firstborn of Egypt
John 19:16-37 -The crucifixion of Christ
-If you remember, the time for this was the feast of unleavened bread, as described in Exodus.
-Christ was or sacrifice for us, and the fulfillment of the Passover.
He was an unblemished lamb (I Peter 1:18-21)
His bones were not broken (John 19:36)
Through His blood we are passed over for death
(Romans 5:9, I John 1:7)
The result is freedom from bondage (John 8:31-38, Rev 1:5)
We must partake of the Passover lamb, as the Israelites were to partake of the Passover lamb (John 6:51-58)
Christ is the fulfillment of the Passover. He was the ultimate sacrifice. As our Passover Lamb, He took our place in death. For the sins we are guilty of, He offered Himself, so that we could be passed over in the final day, and not suffer the second death. Through His sacrifice, we have opportunity to have life everlasting.
-Much as the Passover and feast of unleavened bread were to be remembered, so it is with Christ’s sacrifice for us (Mark 14:12-26)
Just as they were to remember, we are to remember (Acts 20:7)
Anytime we sin, we make the sacrifice of Christ, our Passover, of no account. We try to make it meaningless by those sins.

So the question is, are we crucifying Christ again? Have we made His death of no account? Do we ignore His sacrifice for our sins?

-The lamb was to be an unblemished 1 year old males (taking the place of firstborn males)
-The bones of the lamb were not to be broken (Exodus 12:46)
-God kept His promise, and destroyed the firstborn of Egypt
John 19:16-37 -The crucifixion of Christ
-If you remember, the time for this was the feast of unleavened bread, as described in Exodus.
-Christ was or sacrifice for us, and the fulfillment of the Passover.
He was an unblemished lamb (I Peter 1:18-21)
His bones were not broken (John 19:36)
Through His blood we are passed over for death
(Romans 5:9, I John 1:7)
The result is freedom from bondage (John 8:31-38, Rev 1:5)
We must partake of the Passover lamb, as the Israelites were to partake of the Passover lamb (John 6:51-58)
Christ is the fulfillment of the Passover. He was the ultimate sacrifice. As our Passover Lamb, He took our place in death. For the sins we are guilty of, He offered Himself, so that we could be passed over in the final day, and not suffer the second death. Through His sacrifice, we have opportunity to have life everlasting.
-Much as the Passover and feast of unleavened bread were to be remembered, so it is with Christ’s sacrifice for us (Mark 14:12-26)
Just as they were to remember, we are to remember (Acts 20:7)
Anytime we sin, we make the sacrifice of Christ, our Passover, of no account. We try to make it meaningless by those sins.
Hebrews 6:4-6 -Through sin, we crucify Christ again
So the question is, are we crucifying Christ again? Have we made His death of no account? Do we ignore His sacrifice for our sins?

Christ's Model Prayer - 3/23/08am
Christ’s Model Prayer
We often discuss how we should pray and what we should pray about. It can be useful to look to our ultimate example, Christ, and see what He taught on prayer. And of course, a good place to start with that is the example prayer that He showed to his disciples.
Matthew 6:5-15 -Christ’s model prayer
This prayer, and the context surrounding it, helps us to understand how we are to pray, and what we are to pray.
How to Pray:
Matthew 6:5-6 -Not for public acclaim
Matthew 6:7-8 -Not babbling or using many words
-God knows what we need before we ask
The Model Prayer:
This prayer shows us different aspects of prayer, and different types of prayer
Matthew 6:9 -Pray to God the Father
Matthew 6:9 -Praise to God
James 3:9-12 -With the tongue we praise the Lord
I Peter 1:23-9 -Why we praise God
A Form of praise is offering thanksgiving to God for the things He has done. This is the recognition of who has provided for us all that we need, and a recognition of where the glory for it belongs.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18 -Pray continually, giving thanks
Philippians 4:4-7 -Present all prayers with thanksgiving
Matthew 6:10 -The kingdom is already here, now
Matthew 16:28 -The kingdom came in the 1st century
Colossians 1:12 -The kingdom
Matthew 6:10 -The Lord’s Will, not our own
Matthew 26:42 -Let this cup pass from me…
